Abstract | Don't hide your Next Great Theorem behind bad writing. This course teaches fundamental communication skills in mathematics: how to write clearly and how to structure mathematical content for different audiences, from theses, to preprints, to personal statements in applications. In addition, the course will help you establish a working knowledge of LaTeX. |
Objective | Knowing how to present written mathematics in a structured and clear manner. |
Content | Topics covered include: - Language conventions and common errors. - How to write a thesis (more generally, a mathematics paper). - How to use LaTeX. - How to write a personal statement for Masters and PhD applications. |

Repetition | The performance assessment is only offered at the end after the course unit. Repetition only possible after re-enrolling. |
Additional information on mode of examination | The compulsory continuous performance assessment consists of 4 written assignments (each of which have two parts, consisting of a writing and an editing phase). 1. At least 3 out of the 4 assignments must be submitted and passed (i.e. grade ≥ 4) in order for the student to be eligible to take the final exam. 2. A not submitted assignment counts with grade 1. 3. Each written assignment counts 12.5% of the final grade (thus combined they account for 50% of the final grade). Be aware that no exam repetition is offered. |
