KurzbeschreibungThis course provides fundamental knowledge in the principles of quantum mechanics and connects it to applications in engineering.
LernzielTo work effectively in many areas of modern engineering, such as renewable energy and nanotechnology, students must possess a basic understanding of quantum mechanics. The aim of this course is to provide this knowledge while making connections to applications of relevancy to engineers. After completing this course, students will understand the basic postulates of quantum mechanics and be able to apply mathematical methods for solving various problems including atoms, molecules, and solids. Additional examples from engineering disciplines will also be integrated.

Zusatzinformation zum PrüfungsmodusThe final note of each student will be determined from:

60-Minute Interim Examination: 20% (bonus only)
120-Minute Final Session Examination: 80%

The interim examination will take place approximately half way through the course during one of the scheduled lecture periods. This exam will count up to 20% of the final grade, but only if it improves the student's final mark. If a student performs better on the final exam than on the interim exam, the final exam will determine 100% of the student's final mark. Also, if a student misses the interim exam for any reason, the final exam will determine 100% of the student's final mark.

For both exams, each student will be allowed to bring a standard scientific calculator. An announcement will be made before the exam begins whether this calculator will be necessary. For the interim exam, each student will be allowed to bring one piece of A4 paper with hand-written notes on both sides (the "cheat sheet"). For the final session exam, each student will be allowed to bring two pieces of A4 paper with hand-written notes on both sides of each sheet. Each student can put whatever information they want on these pages, but it must be written or drawn by their own hand. No scanning, printing, or photocopying is allowed. Other than these cheat sheets, each of the exams is "closed book."
Hilfsmittel schriftlichFor allowed aids, see "Further information on examination mode" For the interim exam and the final session exam, devices with internet access and mini computers are not allowed.
